Description
This activity focuses on the use of IHC in diagnostic breast pathology. Through a series of cases, learners will recognize pitfalls in the use of myoepithelial stains and E-cadherin, understand the IHC staining patterns of various papillary lesions, and review markers that aid in the work-up of an unknown primary tumor when breast carcinoma is a consideration.

This activity was originally presented at Pathology in the Park in 2022.

Objectives
After completing this activity, you should be able to:

  1. Recognize the pitfalls in the use of myoepithelial markers related to specific breast proliferations such as sclerosing lesions and papillary lesions.
  2. Know the sources of cross-reactivity (blood vessels, stroma) associated with certain myoepithelial markers.
  3. Determine site of origin (mammary versus non-mammary) of a metastatic tumor using traditional (ER, CK7, CK20, mammaglobin, GCDFP-15) and newer (GATA3, SOX10) IHC stains.
