This activity was originally released as Understanding Breast Imaging Terminology (SAM eligible) and was available between June 30, 2011 and June 30, 2014. The content was reviewed in March, 2014 and an updated version of the activity, with the same title, was available from July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2017. The content was reviewed in January 2017 and an updated version of the activity, with the same title, was available from July 5, 2017 to July 3, 2020. The content was reviewed in 2019. If you completed previous versions, you are not eligible to claim CME/SAM credit(s) for completing this updated version.

Correlating the histologic and radiographic findings is essential to ensure that the abnormality identified by imaging studies has been properly evaluated. This activity will help pathologists understand common imaging terminology and the application of mammography, ultrasound, and MRI imaging modalities used in evaluating breast lesions. Review questions are presented throughout the activity to check your understanding. A BI-RADS 5th edition quick reference card is also provided as a printable resource.

After completing this SAM eligible activity and posttest, you should be able to:

  1. Recognize common terminology associated with major imaging modalities (mammography, ultrasound, and MRI).
  2. Explain the utility and inherent limitations of the major imaging modalities (mammography, ultrasound, and MRI).

This activity meets the American Board of Pathology’s (ABPath) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) requirements for Self-Assessment Modules (SAMs).

Continuing Professional Development (CPD), Section 3 Credit
Accreditation in Canada: This event is an Accredited Self Assessment Program (Section 3) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification Program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, approved by the Canadian Association of Pathologists - Association Canadienne des Pathologistes. You may claim a maximum of 1.75 hour(s) equivalent to 5.25 credit(s).

Passing Requirements
You have a total of three opportunities to take and pass the posttest. If you correctly answer 70% or more of the posttest items, you may claim credit. CME/SAM credit can be applied to the American Board of Pathology (ABPath) Self-Assessment Module (SAM) requirements.You must pass the posttest to claim credit; therefore, if you do not pass, you cannot claim any credit.

Attention Canadian Participants: You have three opportunities to take and pass the posttest. If you do not pass the posttest after three attempts, you may still claim CPD credit (self-assessment program credits) for this activity.
