Description
Thrombocytosis is a common finding on routine CBCs. This activity provides pathologists with a stepwise approach for laboratory workup of thrombocytosis with emphasis on cytogenetic and molecular testing. For pathologists involved in hematopathology sign out, this activity demonstrates application of WHO 2017 criteria for the diagnosis and subclassification of both common and uncommon myeloid neoplasms associated with thrombocytosis.

This clinical pathology activity is intended for pathologists.

Objectives
After completing this activity, you should be able to:

  1. List the causes of thrombocytosis.
  2. Differentiate between reactive and neoplastic causes of thrombocytosis.
  3. Use appropriate molecular genetic testing in the setting of thrombocytosis.
  4. Identify subcategories of myeloid neoplasms associated with thrombocytosis using WHO 2017 criteria.
