Description
Blood product shortages disproportionately affect platelet inventories and can often lead to misunderstandings between the blood bank and clinical providers. This activity emphasizes the importance of establishing evidence-based institutional guidelines for platelet transfusion with a multidisciplinary group of providers to facilitate collaboration and communication with clinical colleagues.

This clinical pathology activity is intended for pathologists.

Objectives
After completing this activity, you should be able to:

  1. Evaluate and integrate professional practice guidelines for platelet transfusion established by internal medicine/hematology/oncology, interventional radiology, surgery/anesthesiology, and transfusion medicine.
  2. Identify key components needed for the development of evidence-based institution-specific prophylactic transfusion guidelines.
  3. Identify the available platelet products and enumerate their benefits and limitations.
