Description
Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is important for both pregnancy diagnosis and as a tumor marker. Discover the complexities of hCG physiology and pathophysiology to better understand appropriate test selection and to learn how to interpret challenging hCG results.

This clinical pathology activity is intended for pathologists.

Objectives
After completing this assessment activity, you should be able to:

  1. Describe the forms of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG).
  2. Describe the physiologic and pathologic patterns for hCG elevation.
  3. Compare the primary methodologies and matrices for hCG testing and their associated advantages and disadvantages.
  4. Explain the measurement of hCG for pregnancy assessment and oncology applications.
  5. Identify guidelines for appropriate hCG test use in various clinical settings.
