Validating a Whole Side Imaging System: A Case-Based Approach to CAP Guidelines - VALDTGWSI12Q.2019
Untitled Document

This informatics activity is intended for pathologists who have basic-to-moderate knowledge and skills in digital pathology and whole slide imaging (WSI) and want to sharpen their skills in validating WSI systems and adhering to CAP guidelines.

Credit Type: CME, SAM
Duration: 1 hour 15 minutes
Launch Date: December 30, 2019
Expiration Date: December 29, 2022 12:00 AM (ET)
Pricing: Junior Member Fee: $10.00
MOC Category: Systems-Based Practice

Description
Digital pathology systems must be validated prior to being used in a clinical setting. Although the CAP has provided guidelines on validating whole slide imaging, many pathologists have minimal experience with operating a digital pathology system. This activity is intended to teach participants how to validate a whole slide imaging system. Faculty will review the CAP-published guidelines with focus on intended clinical use, sample number, and concordance rate, and cover use cases including intraoperative diagnosis and consultation. A hypothetical validation study is used for discussing conditions in which revalidation of a system must be considered.

Objectives
After completing this SAM eligible activity and post-test, you should be able to:

  1. Design a validation study for a whole slide imaging system that meets CAP guidelines.
  2. Determine the human resources required for a validation study.
  3. Calculate the concordance rate between standard microscopy of glass slides versus whole slide scanned images.
  4. Determine when a whole slide imaging system needs to be revalidated.

CME Information
Accreditation: The College of American Pathologists (CAP) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

CME Category 1: The College of American Pathologists designates this internet enduring material educational activity for a maximum of 1.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

This activity meets the American Board of Pathology’s (ABP) Continuing Certification (CC) requirements for Self-Assessment Modules (SAMs).

Passing Requirements
You have a total of three opportunities to take and pass the post-test. If you correctly answer 70% or more of the post-test items, you may claim credit. CME/SAM credit can be applied to the American Board of Pathology (ABP) Self-Assessment Module (SAM) requirements. You must pass the post-test to claim credit; therefore, if you do not pass, you cannot claim any credit.
