Description
Blood gases (most often arterial) are one of the most ordered tests in the hospital setting and are used to make vitally important decisions in critically ill patients. Although blood gases are interpreted at the bedside by providers, pathologists serving as medical directors may need to address questions regarding unexpected results. This activity will review common challenges in blood gas testing that will equip the pathologist to effectively address preanalytical and analytical factors relevant to blood gases.

This clinical pathology activity is intended for pathologists.

Objectives
After completing this activity, you should be able to:

  1. Select venous or arterial blood gases for patient diagnosis and management.
  2. Differentiate total serum CO2 concentration and blood gas bicarbonate (HCO3-) concentration.
  3. Recognize and mitigate the adverse effects of various preanalytical conditions that affect the measurement of blood gases.
