Transfusion medicine involves many hot-seat decisions that span a wide patient spectrum—from surgery and hematology/oncology to obstetrics and neonatology. Transfusion Medicine in the Hot Seat is a useful text for pathology trainees and an educational resource for pathologists who cover transfusion medicine.
The text is divided into three sections:
Antibodies
Blood components
Complications
Each section presents numerous short cases that illustrate real-world transfusion scenarios, with 26 cases total. The short-case format makes the information easily accessible and can serve as the basis for a transfusion medicine curriculum in clinical pathology. The content includes blood, platelet, and cryoprecipitate transfusions as well as hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Cases include the incompatible crossmatch, appropriate use of cryoprecipitate, massive transfusion protocols, molecular testing for Rh(D) variants, and adverse reactions ranging from hypotension to hyperhemolysis.
Due to time in transit for locations outside of the US and Canada, the CAP cannot guarantee performance of programs with two days or less stability; therefore, the CAP does not recommend the purchase of these programs and cannot offer credits.
