Description
Plasma cell neoplasms may present in a variety of ways and mimic other hematologic malignancies or nonneoplastic processes. The pathologist plays a crucial role in ensuring the use of appropriate diagnostic and prognostic ancillary studies to enable timely identification and prompt initiation of the appropriate therapy. This activity reviews the differential diagnosis and potential diagnostic pitfalls to ensure that pathologists are proficient in the identification and workup of plasmacytic proliferations.
This clinical pathology activity is intended for pathologists.
Objectives
After completing this activity, you should be able to:
- Discriminate plasma cell neoplasms from mimicking conditions (eg, reactive proliferations, hematolymphoid neoplasms with plasmacytic differentiation).
- Recognize plasma cell myeloma based on the integration of the clinical, morphologic, immunophenotypic, radiologic, and relevant ancillary laboratory studies.
- Select and interpret the recommended evidence-based prognostic testing once a diagnosis of plasma cell myeloma has been established.
