Kandice Kottke-Marchant, MD, PhD, FCAP

An Algorithmic Approach to Hemostasis Testing is a well-illustrated reference text and practical guide for pathologists and laboratories engaged in hemostasis testing. It includes sections on hemostasis physiology, the basics of laboratory testing and interpretation, sample collection and processing, patient history and diagnostic criteria, and anticoagulant drug monitoring.

Case studies and detailed algorithms related to bleeding disorders and venous thrombophilic disorders are presented, including:

  • Elevated PT and/or aPTT
  • Bleeding with normal PT and aPTT
  • Abnormal thrombin time
  • Fibrinolytic and platelet disorders
  • Von Willebrand disease
  • Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia
  • Antiphospholipid antibody syndrome and lupus anticoagulants

Recommendations for thrombophilia testing in adults, women, and children also are presented. Each chapter contains a thorough list of recommended reading, and examples of both adult and pediatric reference ranges are included.

Comments

If I had only had a book like this when I was learning hemostasis! This is the most concise yet comprehensive text in hemostasis currently available. The organization is superb and the algorithms allow quick reference. This text is a must-have for any pathologist or hematologist who deals with bleeding and clotting disorders, as I am certain they will find it to be a quick and easy reference for even the most difficult coagulation cases.
